How artificial rock walls are built — the 4-step process

Not a panel, not a cast, not glued cladding. A hand-sculpted artificial rock wall is built directly on your wall from structural mortar. Here is exactly how — the stages, the materials, the tools, the timeline.

Overview — four stages, 5–8 working days

A typical 20–30 m² villa feature wall is delivered in 5–8 working days from armature setup to sealed handover. Larger walls, multi-room projects, and outdoor pool applications add a proportional buffer. The four stages below apply to every project — from a small entrance accent to a double-height villa lobby.

Step 1 — Design and quote: WhatsApp photos and dimensions for a hand-sculpted artificial rock wall in Dubai
Step 01 · Design & Quote

Step 1 · Design and Quote

Everything starts on WhatsApp. Send two photos of the wall and one measurement (width × height in metres). A fixed quote is returned within 24 hours, along with a moodboard showing the sculpt direction — texture depth, colour palette, reference natural rock formation if requested.

For projects above 60 m² or hotel/restaurant fit-outs, a brief Zoom call is arranged to align on design and access logistics before quoting. No site visit fee, no design retainer, no obligation. Two design revisions are included in the standard quote.

Once approved, 30% deposit locks the schedule and orders materials. Fabrication starts within 3 weeks (current lead time on villa feature walls).

Step 2 — Stainless-steel armature and fibreglass mesh for an artificial rock wall in Dubai
Step 02 · Base & Metal Mesh

Step 2 · Base and Metal Mesh

The structural skeleton is built directly on the existing wall — concrete block, gypsum board, or brick all work. No demolition needed in most cases.

Stainless-steel armature. Grade 316 stainless steel resists Gulf humidity and salt air corrosion. Mechanically anchored into the wall with rotary-hammer-drilled anchors, spaced to distribute load and prevent stress cracking. For pool applications, marine-grade anchors are specified.

Alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh. Bonded over the armature as a substrate for the mortar. AR-fibreglass prevents the alkali content of Portland-based mortar from degrading the mesh over time — a common failure mode in cheap installations.

Step 2 typically takes 1–2 working days for a 20–30 m² wall. All work is dust-managed for occupied villas — plastic sheeting on floors and adjacent surfaces, HEPA vacuum for drilling debris.

Step 3 — Structural mortar sculpted wet by hand with mineral pigments — Sergio Decoration Dubai
Step 03 · Sculpt & Finish

Step 3 · Sculpt and Finish

The two-coat structural mortar is the "flesh" of the wall. This is where the artistry happens — and where cheap imitations fail.

Coat 1 · Structural base. Fibre-reinforced structural mortar troweled onto the fibreglass mesh. Cures for 12–24 hours depending on ambient conditions. This coat delivers the mechanical strength.

Coat 2 · Sculpt coat. Second mortar layer applied while workable. This is the layer that gets carved — sculptors work the wet mortar with carving knives, shaping tools, and steel floats to create the rock texture. No molds, no cast pieces, no repeating patterns.

Mineral pigments. Iron-oxide-based mineral pigments worked into the wet mortar to build natural stone colouring. Mineral pigments are UV-stable — they don't fade in Dubai sun the way synthetic pigments do. Multiple layers of pigment build depth and variation, matching the reference from the design stage.

Step 3 is the longest stage — 2–4 working days for a 20–30 m² wall, longer for deep-relief three-dimensional rockwork with overhangs and recessed pockets.

Step 4 — Sealed handover: finished hand-sculpted artificial rock wall in a Dubai villa
Step 04 · Seal & Handover

Step 4 · Seal and Handover

The final sealant coat locks in the pigments and protects against UAE conditions.

Interior walls. Matte-finish mineral seal — invisible, breathable, preserves the natural stone look.

Outdoor walls. UV-stable mineral seal rated for 50°C summer heat and Gulf humidity. Sealant is water-based and mineral-content — no glossy plastic finish. Refresh recommended every 5–7 years for outdoor applications, longer for shaded areas.

Pool walls & below-waterline. Marine-grade sealant over a cementitious waterproofing membrane applied before sculpting. Rated for chlorine, salt water, and permanent immersion.

Full cure over 24–48 hours before handover. Walkthrough with client to confirm the finish matches the approved sample and moodboard. If it doesn't match, we start over — no charge. Warranted against workmanship defects.

Materials & tools we use

Materials

  • Grade 316 stainless-steel armature bar
  • Marine-grade mechanical anchors
  • Alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh (AR-glass)
  • Fibre-reinforced Portland-based structural mortar
  • Iron-oxide mineral pigments (multiple tones)
  • UV-stable water-based mineral sealant
  • Marine-grade sealant & cementitious membrane (pool)

Tools

  • Rotary hammer drills for anchor placement
  • Steel trowels & wooden floats for mortar application
  • Carving knives, chisels, and shaping tools
  • Pigment brushes and sponges for texture
  • Airless spray gun for sealant application
  • HEPA vacuum and dust extraction for occupied villas
  • Site scaffolding for ceilings above 4 m (quoted separately)

Quality checks — what we look for

Anchor pull-test. Random sample of anchor points is pull-tested before mesh application. A failed anchor is re-drilled and re-set before proceeding.

Mesh continuity. No gaps, no overlaps thinner than 100 mm. Mesh is inspected corner-to-corner before mortar application.

Coat-1 cure. Structural mortar must reach 60% hydration before Coat-2 is applied. Time-based inspection matched to ambient temperature and humidity.

Carve consistency. Sculpt matches the approved moodboard and sample panel. Client walkthrough at end of Step 3, before sealant, gives one final variation opportunity.

Seal even coverage. No sealant pooling, no dry patches. Verified visually against angled light before handover.

If any check fails, that section is re-worked before proceeding. If the wall does not match the sample we approved together, we start over — no charge. This is the Craft Commitment: every wall sculpted by the same hands that trained on our first project, no subcontractors, no mass production.

Frequently asked process questions

How long does it take to build an artificial rock wall in Dubai?

5–8 working days for a typical 20–30 m² villa feature wall. Larger walls or multi-room projects run 2–3 weeks. All work is dust-managed for occupied villas.

What materials are used?

Grade 316 stainless-steel armature, alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh, fibre-reinforced structural mortar (two coats), iron-oxide mineral pigments, UV-stable water-based mineral sealant. Marine-grade for pool applications. No PVC, no printed panels, no adhesive fixing.

Do you use molds?

No. Every wall is sculpted by hand on site — no molds, no cast pieces, no repeating patterns. Because carving happens wet on the actual wall surface, no two Sergio walls are identical.

Can you match a specific rock reference from a photograph?

Yes. The design stage accepts reference photographs, Pinterest moodboards, or specific natural rock formations. Two design revisions are included. Bespoke references may add consultation time.

What happens to the wall behind the sculpt?

The existing wall is the structural anchor. Concrete blocks, gypsum board, or brick all work — the stainless-steel armature is mechanically fixed into whatever structure is behind. No demolition required in most cases.

Is the installation messy? Can I stay in the villa during work?

Yes, you can stay. Dust is managed with plastic sheeting on floors and adjacent surfaces, HEPA vacuum for drilling debris, and controlled mortar mixing to minimise airborne particles. Water is used sparingly during carving — no flooding risk.
